I am a basic Plex user, never tinkered with it much, and only recently set it up again for my friends. I hope that's enough info, but if you need more to help me out then please let me know what I must do and how I can get the info. I guess sticking to 720p might be the best option. Just wanted to re-encode (if that's the right term), their stuff to a lower quality file size/bit rate.
My quality shows are all 1080p, minimum 2 GB per file, and although in Plex, I watch these via Kodi (on the NUC), so I'm taken care of. I have a semi powerful i7 (8th gen) gaming rig, but obviously don't want to leave that running 24/7, but I can use this PC to do the conversion. My NUC is powerful enough to transcode at least one stream, but trying to avoid it if I can as I use the NUC for work as well during the day. To be honest the main reason for doing this is because he keeps seeing the message 'transcoding due to insufficient bandwidth, require xxxx, available 10000', something along those lines, I just remember that the stick has available 10000 KB, odd that it's such a rounded number. I just tried to convert a 1080p HEVC file (1.8 GB) to H264, and it took almost 20 minutes, but the converted file was 2.7 GB's in size! I tried to convert it to 720p using the same setting, and this time it was converted to a 1.3 GB file which is acceptable, but I would prefer to retain the 1080p resolution. When using Plex's built-in optimization using the custom Universtal TV setting set to p, the file sizes usually remain the same, in some cases it even increases by a few MB's. Most of my files are 1080p MKV files between 1.5 - 2 GB's in size. I have Plex Server running on an Intel NUC8i5BEH, and currently trying to optimize my library so they play nice with a mates Fire TV 4K stick.
